Wise, a veteran in the open-source robotics software community, acknowledged the concerns surrounding the rise of robots, particularly in the context of safety and job displacement. She poses a simple question: “If I could give you mechanical devices with software that would do all the crappy tasks for you, would you take it?” Fetch Robotics’ warehouse robots, for instance, can cover vast distances and perform tasks that would be physically demanding for humans.
One challenge, Wise notes, lies in building user-friendly interfaces that make robots accessible to those with limited technical knowledge. “The hard stuff is enabling people who know nothing about computers or robots,” she stated.
Wise also addressed the gender gap in the tech industry, emphasizing the need for greater representation of women in engineering and robotics. She attributes this gap to societal expectations and cultural biases that often limit opportunities for women in STEM fields.
