MegaBots: The Rise of Giant Robot Fighting
At TechCrunch Disrupt SF, MegaBots, a Bay Area company, presented their vision for a new sports league featuring giant robots battling each other. With a high-production-value web series documenting their journey, MegaBots is aiming for a “Formula 1-inspired robotic fighting league.”
The company has partnered with a film crew to create captivating entertainment, showcasing their engineering prowess. MegaBots’ aim is to bridge the gap between science fiction and reality, creating a spectacle that blends the thrill of sports leagues with cutting-edge robotics.
Currently, Team USA is preparing its latest robot for a showdown against Team Japan, Suidobashi Heavy Industry, which accepted MegaBots’ challenge for a duel in June 2015. However, building these giant, military-grade robots takes time. The company stresses that safety is a major concern, with human pilots operating the robots.
MegaBots aims to expand the league beyond just two teams. They are currently working with three other teams and hope to make the competition even more accessible by developing a $500,000 kit for building robots, making it a more achievable dream for aspiring robot builders.
