WaveOptics Raises $16 Million for Augmented Reality Optics Technology
WaveOptics, a UK startup developing waveguide-based optics for augmented reality, has raised $16 million (£12 million) in a Series B funding round. The investment, led by existing investors Octopus Ventures, Touchstone Innovations plc, and Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH, along with new investor Gobi Ventures, will fuel the company’s next phase of growth.
WaveOptics is building technology based on hologram physics and photonic crystals. It claims to have a unique approach that addresses the limitations of existing AR optics. Traditional AR optics either result in bulky devices or compromise on performance, sacrificing immersive experiences. WaveOptics, on the other hand, aims to provide both a compact form factor and high-quality, immersive visuals.
The company is already working with major tech companies on AR hardware and expects to launch its first products in the consumer and enterprise markets next year. Their technology is geared towards providing real-time processing of images and delivering data to users in active environments, as showcased in a demonstration video on their website.

WaveOptics has gained significant traction since its initial funding round in 2015. The company has received positive feedback on its beta products and is positioned to become a leader in the rapidly growing AR market.
The $16 million investment underscores the increasing interest in AR technologies and the potential of WaveOptics’ innovative approach. As the AR industry matures, companies like WaveOptics are becoming attractive acquisition targets for tech giants looking to integrate AR functionalities into their devices and services. However, WaveOptics is currently focused on building its product and client base.
