Google Acquired AIMatter: Search Giant Seeks Computer Vision Power
Google is looking to bolster its computer vision capabilities. The search giant has acquired AIMatter, a Belarusian startup. AIMatter has developed a neural network-based AI platform and SDK for rapid image detection and processing on mobile devices, along with a photo and video editing app called Fabby, which serves as a proof-of-concept for AIMatter’s technology.
Fabby has been downloaded over 2 million times and will continue to operate. Most of AIMatter’s employees will also transition to Google.
AIMatter had operations in Minsk, the Bay Area, and Zurich. Google hasn’t disclosed details about the location of AIMatter’s staff or their future projects following the acquisition.

AIMatter had raised around $2 million in funding from various investors, including Haxus, Yuri Melnichek, and Andrei Kulik.
Haxus also invested in MSQRD, which was acquired by Facebook; Maps.me, which was acquired by Mail.ru; and Prisma, the popular app that can transform photos and videos into paintings using various filters.
Prisma remains independent.
