Magic Leap One: Creator Edition AR Headset Shipping in 2018
Magic Leap has finally revealed its highly anticipated product. Leveraging funding from Google, Alibaba, and others, the company unveiled the Magic Leap One “Creator Edition” AR headset for developers. This headset is set for shipment in 2018. Details on pricing and a consumer release date are yet to be announced.
The Magic Leap One comprises three hardware components:
- Lightwear: A headset utilizing the company’s “Digital Lightfield” display technology, featuring multiple integrated sensors for spatial information gathering.
- Lightpack: A sizable circular hip-mounted pack containing the headset’s computer, tethered to the goggles.
- Control: A hand-held controller that tracks in space, aiding users in navigating menus and the Magic Leap environment.

The headset’s design aligns with previous patent disclosures and leaks. However, the bulkiness of the front and the frame size may raise questions about the headset’s field of view.
While the company mentions its “Digital Lightfield” technology, the specifics remain unclear. It’s uncertain whether it’s true light field technology or a simulation.
Beyond the controller, the headset will support voice, gesture, head pose, and eye-tracking inputs. Magic Leap stated that prescription lenses will be available, and the headset will come in two sizes.
Software-wise, Magic Leap emphasizes its platform’s capabilities. A Creator Portal, launching in early 2018, will provide developers with documentation, tools, and resources.
Many aspects of the consumer release remain unclear, but the design reflects Magic Leap’s current capabilities. The announcement clarifies that the “product is continually advancing and may be different at time of shipment.”
