Amazon Rekognition Now Recognizes Celebrities: A New Feature For Image Recognition
Amazon’s Rekognition, a powerful tool for image analysis, has expanded its capabilities to include celebrity recognition. The service can now identify a wide range of famous individuals across various domains, including politics, sports, entertainment, and media.
This new feature allows developers to utilize Rekognition by accessing its API. Amazon Web Service (AWS) account holders can also experiment with a demo available on the platform. Notably, upon successful identification, Rekognition links to the celebrity’s IMDB page, as IMDB is an Amazon subsidiary.
This addition enhances Rekognition’s existing features, which include recognizing emotions and demographics in images, facial recognition based on user-defined image sets, and object and scene recognition.

While Google’s Vision API currently lacks a similar celebrity recognition feature, Microsoft’s Cognitive Services offers a comparable capability. Microsoft’s service can identify roughly 200,000 celebrities. Tests have shown that both Amazon and Microsoft’s services perform equally well. However, Microsoft’s Cognitive Services provides additional benefits, including the ability to identify information about other objects in a scene and generate captions based on the image content.
