Managing Software Complexity Through Intent-Based Programming
Software is losing its magic due to overwhelming complexity. To regain this magic, developers need to shift towards intent-based programming—defining the desired outcome and letting the system autonomously find the solution. This is analogous to management by objectives (MBO) in business. Examples include chatbots, self-driving systems, and image processing. This approach uses layers, each with a specific task, increasing sophistication at each level. Distributed cloud systems like Google’s Kubernetes, autonomous vehicles, and AI utilize this approach. This paradigm shift is crucial to address the escalating complexity of interdependent systems and rising user expectations.
