CastAR, the AR Headset Startup Backed by Andy Rubin, Shuts Down
CastAR, a promising augmented reality startup, has unfortunately met its end. Founded by former Valve employees Jeri Ellsworth and Rick Johnson, CastAR aimed to create a headset that projected holographic images into the user’s field of view. This technology, similar to Microsoft’s and Magic Leap’s products, garnered significant attention and funding.
Following a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over 1million,CastARsecured15 million from Andy Rubin’s Playground Global. However, despite these financial injections, the company faced challenges in delivering its promised devices and eventually pushed back its timelines.
While mobile-based augmented reality technologies like those from Apple and Google are gaining traction, building compelling headset hardware remains a difficult hurdle. CastAR’s struggle to secure further investment and compete with well-funded competitors like Magic Leap ultimately led to its closure.

The shutdown resulted in layoffs, with a core group of employees attempting to sell off the company’s technology. The news comes as a disappointment to many, as CastAR’s innovative approach and talented team held great potential in the emerging AR market.
