UK to Give Police New Powers to Ground Drones
The UK government announced plans to introduce draft legislation in the spring to prevent unsafe or criminal drone use. Following a public consultation, the government will introduce a Drone Bill with measures including new police powers to order drones grounded if necessary and seize drone parts as evidence of criminal activity. Drone registration for devices weighing 250 grams or more will be mandatory, along with safety awareness tests and the use of specific apps to ensure safe and legal flights. Aviation minister Baroness Sugg emphasized the importance of harnessing the benefits of drone technology while addressing illegal use and safety concerns. Assistant chief constable Serena Kennedy warned of serious criminal charges for misuse. The government is considering banning drones near airports or above 400 feet and is collaborating with manufacturers on geofencing technology to restrict access to sensitive areas. A drone innovation project, “The Flying High Challenge,” will also be funded to explore drone applications in critical services.
