HoloKit: Google Cardboard for Augmented Reality?
HoloKit is an ingenious DIY solution for creating an augmented reality experience, much like the concept of Google Cardboard for VR. The device utilizes a simple setup involving mirrors and a Fresnel lens to reflect a smartphone’s display onto a semi-transparent surface, enabling users to see both the digital image and the real world. This allows for a low-cost and readily accessible way to experiment with AR applications.
The kit leverages the camera and sensors of a smartphone to track the real world, making it possible to overlay digital content onto the physical environment. This approach, while less sophisticated than dedicated AR headsets like the Microsoft HoloLens, offers an approachable and cost-effective alternative for individuals and organizations.

HoloKit is currently compatible with the iPhone 7 and Plus, Pixel phones, and Project Tango hardware. The project, spearheaded by Amber Garage, is expected to release the code and documentation on GitHub next week. Kits are scheduled to be available for purchase starting in July.
The development of HoloKit signifies a significant step towards making augmented reality more accessible and widespread. It opens up opportunities for creative applications in various sectors, from education and entertainment to retail and manufacturing.
