Sony to Demo 3D Face Biometric Running on Xperia Smartphone
Sony, through its subsidiary SoftKinetic, will showcase a 3D facial recognition system running on an Xperia smartphone at the MWC tradeshow in Shanghai this week. The system utilizes a depth sensor and facial recognition software from Swiss company KeyLemon, promising enhanced security and user convenience. Unlike previous 2D face unlock features, this 3D system aims to be spoof-proof, preventing attempts to unlock using 2D photos or 3D-printed models.
KeyLemon emphasizes that the 3D sensor enables authentication using non-frontal faces, allowing for greater flexibility and fewer failed attempts. The company states the technology provides a secure and convenient authentication method.

This development follows rumors of Apple’s plans to incorporate a 3D depth sensor in future iPhones, potentially for similar biometric authentication purposes. The growing interest in 3D facial recognition technology points towards its potential to become a standard feature in future smartphones.
